Everyone wants more energy, the health food and supplement industry is full of products that promise to boost your energy, but have only temporary effects. Instead of treating the symptoms, we should look for the root cause of your fatigue so we can have a long lasting impact. These are the 5 main areas I start with when it comes to testing and supplementation.

1) Adrenals
Adrenal fatigue is characterized by exhaustion and fatigue. When under stress the adrenals react by producing the stress hormone cortisol. Instead of producing sex hormones, your body produces cortisol affecting your hormone balance. Excess cortisol can lead to weight gain and decrease your immune response to infection. Your cortisol should peak in the morning before you wake up decrease as through the day dipping before bedtime, so if you feel that dip early in the day or you are unable to sleep, you should consider checking your adrenals with saliva cortisol testing.

2) Hormones
Proper hormonal balance is essential to maintain optimal health. Hormonal imbalance and deficiencies as we age can contribute to weight gain, fatigue, sex drive, hair loss, insomnia, brain fog, anxiety and hot flashes. Esterogen is critical for sexual, bone and brain health. Testosterone, enhances your sex drive, muscle tone, and strengthens bone. If you are suffering from menstraul iregularities, infertility, menopause or andropause symptoms, consider getting your hormone levels checked. Based on your lab results, I can custom formuate a bioidentical hormone cream that can help balance your hormones.

3) Thyroid
The thyroid secretes hormones that regulate your metabolism and temperature. Stress, micronutrient, inflammation, infection, toxins and diet can affect your thyroid hormone production. Disruptions in thyroid hormone can lead to symptoms of fatigue, hair loss, weight gain or loss, insomnia, or depression and anxiety. Your optimal temperature is 98.6 for enzymatic activity in your body, if your body temperature is low, you may have a thyroid deficiency. When I order thyroid testing, I order a complete panel to look for thyroid antibodies, along with levels of T4, Free T3 and Reverse T3 to optimize thyroid function.

4) Gut
We need energy from food in the form of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Even though you may be eating all the right foods, you may not be digesting and absorbing nutrients properly due to food sensitivities or gut dysbiosis. Food sensitivities can contribute to “leaky gut syndrome”, which means your intestinal lining is not tight and therefore is allowing food particles to pass into the body, contributing to inflammation. Dysbiosis occurs from overgrowth of bacteria or candida due to stress and antibiotics. The gut is the foundation of health, without addressing leaky gut or dysbiosis, out body is not able to absorb nutrients or supplements. The first test I recommend to my patients is food allergies (IgE) and food sensitivities (IgG) testing, along with either a stool or urine test to look for gut dysbiosis from candida or SIBO.

5) Micronutrients
Did you know 50% of people taking multivitamins are micronutrient deficient, you may have micronutrient deficiencies if you do not properly absorb vitamins, minerals or antioxidants. Micronutrients are important for the production of hormones, enzymes and energy. Health conditions such as fatigue, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, thyroid and cancer can be affected by micronutrient deficiencies. Rigorious exercise, stressors, prescription drugs all impact micronutrient status and demands. If you want to improve your energy and customize your supplementation, micronutrient testing can provide a guide.
